Wigan off, six matches gone in BPL

The big freeze is continuing to decimate this weekend's action in England and Scotland.

Six Barclays Premier League games have been postponed so far - those on Saturday between Burnley and Stoke, Chelsea and Hull, Fulham and Portsmouth and Sunderland and Bolton, as well as Wigan versus Aston Villa which was called off after a pitch inspection early on Saturday morning.

Sunday's match between Liverpool and Tottenham has also been claimed by the weather.

Arsenal are battling hard to beat the freeze as they look to host Everton. Birmingham City, however, remain confident that their clash with reigning champions Manchester United will be played.

Birmingham vs Man United Preview

Birmingham vs Man United Preview

Sir Alex Ferguson feels new-boy Mame Biram Diouf could get off to a flying start for Manchester United.

United signed Diouf from Molde in the summer but opted to let the Senegal striker remain in Norway before he returned to England in December to join the Red Devils on a full-time basis.

The 22-year-old has now broken through all the necessary red tape and is available for selection at Birmingham.

And, having cast doubt on Diouf's ability to make his debut in what turned out to be a postponed Carling Cup semi-final at Manchester City on Wednesday, Ferguson has no such concerns about St Andrews.

"We are looking to involve Diouf at Birmingham," said Ferguson.

"It is a good time to do it and he may just do well straight away."

Ferguson had certainly been impressed with Diouf prior to the bad weather which has wrecked preparations for the trip to Birmingham.

In handing Diouf Carlos Tevez's old number 32 shirt, Ferguson has presented his newest recruit with a bit of history to live up to.

But the Scot is adamant Diouf has the ability required to live up to any expectation.

"In training he has done very well," he said.

"He is quick and has magnificent spring in the air for someone of 5ft 10in.

"He has a good intelligence and a good feel for the game.

"He has attributes that are suited to us. He is a bit different to what we have at the moment and we have done well to get the kid."

Meanwhile Birmingham boss Alex

McLeish has warned his players to "beware of the wounded animal" when they face United in Saturday evening's clash at St Andrews.

McLeish knows the Red Devils will be "hurting" after suffering a shock FA Cup third round defeat against Leeds at Old Trafford last weekend.

But he is still confident his in-form players can give United - and his former Aberdeen boss Sir Alex Ferguson - the "fright of their lives."

City will go into the game defending an 11 game unbeaten league run which has catapulted them into the top half of the table and already virtually guaranteed their top flight status for another campaign.

McLeish said: "Manchester United, you can't judge them on the last couple of results, because they don't normally go a few games without winning.

"You know there will be a bit of a wounded animal this weekend and extremely dangerous - and if we were to get something off them then we would still be punching above our weight.

"But the players are relishing matches like this. Players who haven't played before in the Premier League relished coming up against Chelsea on Boxing Day, really loved it, and it will be the same against Manchester United.

"Some of them played against United this season at Old Trafford but, at St Andrews, we feel we can be a match for anybody and we will try to give Manchester United the fright of their lives."

McLeish is continually stressing the need for his players not to rest on their laurels after accumulating 32 points going into the New Year means they are only a handful away from safety.

He said: "The points we have amassed so far are way ahead of where we thought we would be and maybe we have got a few points in the bank for a rainy day.

"It has given the players a real impetus and a challenge to such a degree that they are all driving each other on.

"They want to rise to every single challenge and that is the challenge I have issued to them, that they should not be resting on their laurels, not be content with the points they have gained so far.

"They shouldn't be thinking they have got a bit of leeway.

"They have got to keep going and get as many points as they can, as quickly as they can and be relentless and they have risen to every one of those challenges so far.

"At some stage we will lose a game, and that's a fact, but we believe that we can continue the run but they don't come any bigger than Manchester United."

McLeish played under Ferguson in the successful Aberdeen team of the early 1980s and believes some of his qualities have rubbed off on him in management.

He said: "If you go and try and be somebody else, you find you are not actually being true to yourself.

"I always remember getting that advice when I started out in management, that you've got to be yourself and you don't really know what that is until you have a feeling, and you try something. and think 'that wasn't me.'

"Then you begin to evolve - but, at the same time, a lot of the advice and things I learned under Alex Ferguson are in my make-up now, without me actually copying him.

"But it is about players. Let's be honest, Sir Alex has players who are world stars, world class players, so my players are not quite at that level yet - so on paper Manchester United should win."

Birmingham defender Stephen Carr will return after suspension after missing the goalless draw at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup while serving a one-game ban for incurring five bookings.

McLeish will have to reorganise his bench as fringe players Lee Carsley, Stuart Parnaby and Gregory Vignal are all ruled out through injury.

But number two goalkeeper Maik Taylor has recovered from a back problem after having an injection.

Birmingham are confident the clash with United will go ahead, despite weather-enforced postponements of other Premier League games.

A statement from Birmingham read: "Club officials have met with local authority inspectors who have reiterated that they are happy for the fixture to go ahead. This followed an inspection earlier in the week.

"Discussions have also taken place with the emergency services and the Premier League since the recent bad weather took hold and club staff have worked around the clock to ensure the St. Andrew's walkways, car parks and other areas are clear.

"The club's undersoil heating system means there are no problems at all with the pitch."

Beckham: Messi one of the best

England international David Beckham thinks Lionel Messi is "one of the best I've ever seen".

The AC Milan midfielder was asked by uefa.com to give his thoughts on Messi ahead of the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Barcelona striker was recently crowned the FIFA Player of the Year.

"Without doubt, he's one of the best players I've played against and also one of the finest players I've ever seen," Beckham said of Messi.

The former Manchester United favourite went on to say the Argentine reminds him of Diego Maradona.

"For a little player, he's so talented. He's the closest player to Maradona that you can get, and he even plays in a similar passionate way too."

Beckham also expressed his respect for Messi as a person, revealing that he expects the Barca man's excellent attitude will lead him to even more success in the years to come.

"He's successful and a really good person as well. I'm sure he'll go on to be even more successful in the future."

Blatter wants Angola shooting report

Blatter wants Angola shooting report

FIFA President Sepp Blatter wants a full report from the African Football Confederation over the shooting of the Togo team bus in Angola.

The Togo team bus was attacked by unknown gunmen while they were traveling to their base in Carbinda ahead of the African Cup of Nations group games. The driver was killed while nine others were wounded.

FIFA issued a statement on their website saying they "are deeply moved by today's incidents which affected Togo's national team".

Blatter also expects a full report from CAF and its President, Issa Hayatou, on the situation.

It is not known yet how this security issue will impact the FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa later in June.

African Cup of Nations will go ahead"

African Cup of Nations will go ahead"

The Confederation of African Football have condemned Friday's attack on the Togo squad but have indicated the African Nations Cup will go ahead as planned.

The Togo team had just crossed the border from the Democratic Republic of Congo into the Angolan enclave of Cabinda when they came under machine gunfire.

The bus driver was killed while two players were among the injured in the attack, which lasted for around 15 minutes.

Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor revealed tonight the team would decide at a meeting whether to pull out of the tournament, which is due to start on Sunday, and admitted a lot of the players wanted to leave.

CAF held an emergency meeting later in Friday night and released a statement where they talked about taking "decisions to guarantee the smooth running of the competition".

The statement read: "The Confederation of African Football condemned the attack against the Togolese delegation convoy heading to Cabinda from Congo.

"The Angolan Football Association president, who is also the director general of the Local Organising Committee, Mr Justino Fernandes, informed the CAF Executive Committee that the incident happened 10 kilometres within the Angolan territory.

"The Angolan authority deployed immediately a team down there to asses the exact situation. According to the information provided by the director general, all injured people were taken to a hospital in Cabinda.

"On Saturday morning, 9 January 2010, an important delegation headed by the Angolan Minister on Internal Affairs, Ministers of Youth and Sports, members from the Prime Minister's office as well as a powerful delegation from CAF will be in Cabinda.

"The Angolan Prime Minister will meet on Saturday CAF President Mr Issa Hayatou to take decisions to guarantee the smooth running of the competition.

"The Confederation of African Football is terribly saddened by these events and expresses its total support as well as sympathy to the entire Togolese delegation."

Angola promises tougher security measures

Angola promises tougher security measures

Angola insist the African Nations Cup will go ahead safely despite Friday's armed attack on the Togo squad.

The Togo team had just crossed the border from the Democratic Republic of Congo into the Angolan enclave of Cabinda when they came under machine gunfire.

Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor revealed last night the team would decide at a meeting whether to pull out of the tournament, which is due to start tomorrow, and admitted a lot of the players wanted to leave.

However, Angolan minister of youth and sports Goncalves Muandumba insists his country is committed to hosting a secure tournament and said they would step up security.

Muandumba told BBC Radio: "We are going to redouble our efforts.

"We are going to further reinforce all the mechanisms and continue to guarantee security and to create all the conditions which guarantee the success and organisation of the African Nations Cup.

"It was an unfortunate incident and we will find those responsible."

Muandumba is set to be part of a delegation meeting with the Confederation of African Football today.

CAF held an emergency meeting last night and released a statement where they talked about taking "decisions to guarantee the smooth running of the competition".

The statement read: "The Confederation of African Football condemned the attack against the Togolese delegation convoy heading to Cabinda from Congo.

CAF have questioned why Togo were travelling by road rather than flying.

Togo team bus attacked in Angola

Togo team bus attacked in Angola

A bus carrying the Togo national team has reportedly come under attack from gunfire in Angola leaving one dead and several players wounded.

The Sparrow Hawks are in the country ahead of the African Nations Cup, which gets under way on Sunday.

According to reports at least three Togo players and the bus driver suffered injuries during the attack.

"I'm okay but several players are in a bad state," Togo and Nantes striker Thomas Dossevi told French radio station RMC.

"We are still at hospital. We were machine-gunned like dogs and had to remain hidden under our seats for around 20 minutes to avoid the bullets."

Togo are scheduled to begin their cup campaign against Ghana on Monday.

A club spokesman for Manchester City said they were aware of the reports and were trying to contact Adebayor to establish what has happened.

Midfielder Alaixys Romao admits the players feared the worst and thinks Togo are now likely to pull out of the tournament.

"We're not thinking yet of what could happen," said the Grenoble player. "But it's true that no-one wants to play.

"We're not capable of it.

"We're thinking first of all about the health of our injured because there was a lot of blood on the ground.

"For the moment there is not much news because they have been taken to different hospitals.

"In cases like these we're thinking of those near us, of those we love because that really could have been the end of us."

Romanian side FC Vaslui confirmed their defender Serge Akakpo, who joined the club from French side Auxerre last year, was shot and badly injured in the attack.

The club said, though, the 22-year-old was out of danger after being treated by doctors.

A statement on the club's website, www.vasluifc.ro, read: "Badly injured in an ambush in Angola, Serge Akakpo is now out of danger.

"Akakpo was struck by two bullets in the attack and has lost much blood. His condition was stabilised by doctors.

"FC Vaslui have been in touch with relatives of the player, who confirmed he has undergone surgery, which went very well."

Man City v Blackburn

Man City v Blackburn

Man City v Blackburn

I'm going to go for a comfortable City win here. City have real competition for places, they're already making moves in the transfer market - though I'm not sure how much impact Patrick Vieira will have for them - and they look a team on a mission.

Blackburn, on the other hand, are going through an inconsistent spell and that is exactly what they don't need as they travel to a City side that have been excellent at home all season.

Verdict: 3-0

Birmingham v Man Utd

Birmingham v Man Utd (1730)

Birmingham v Man Utd

Birmingham, you would argue, are the form team of the league. They are on a long unbeaten run in the cup and in the league and they're a grown-up Premier League team these days, very good defensively.

Man Utd, on the other hand, are stuttering a touch at right now and are struggling to put away the lower teams, which they used to be so expert at when they had Cristiano Ronaldo.

I'm going to go 1-1 here and I think Birmingham would bite your hand off for that.

Arsenal v Everton

Arsenal v Everton

Arsenal, at the moment, look the only team who want to win the league in terms of their recent results - and all that without Robin van Persie, whose return towards the end of the season could prove absolutely crucial.

Everton have improved of late and I think the signing of Landon Donovan on loan is a decent one. But, while their results and performances are on the right trend, I don't see them getting anything at all from the Emirates.
